Austin Community College officials broke ground today on its future Round Rock campus, joined by a who’s who of Williamson County politicians, developers and school district officials.

A children’s choir shared their voices just before the formal speeches featuring ACC President Stephen Kinslow and Round Rock Mayor Alan McGraw. A hired parachuter also jumped in on the festivities just before college and city officials turned dirt with their shovels.

The Round Rock location, near University Boulevard and A.W. Grimes, will be the college’s largest campus, with up to 11,500 students and 598,000 square feet.

The first phase, which will open in 2010, will have 275,000 square feet, compared to the nearby Texas State University’s Round Rock campus, which has 135,000 square feet, and the future Texas A&M Health Science facility, which also will have 135,000 square feet.

The Round Rock facility will offer classes in health sciences, university preparation and work force training in workforce programs such as renewable energy technology.
